The Grove predates the city itself, settled by Bahamian and New England families in the 1870s and still shaded by the trees they left behind. Sailboats fill Dinner Key Marina most weekends. Restaurants line Commodore Plaza and Grand Avenue, and from almost anywhere here the bay is a few minutes downhill.
Main Highway and Grand Avenue meet near CocoWalk, which is the closest thing the neighborhood has to a center. From there Main Highway curves south past the Barnacle, a nineteenth-century house preserved on its original waterfront lot, toward the older residential streets. Peacock Park drops down to the bay on the north side, and Kennedy Park with its dog run sits a mile up South Bayshore Drive.
Dinner Key holds the marina, the sailing clubs and the former Pan American seaplane terminal that now serves as Miami City Hall. Vizcaya and its gardens are a five-minute drive north.
Grove properties tend to be houses rather than towers: pool homes on quiet streets off Main Highway, and larger waterfront places closer to the bay. Ceilings are high, lots are green, and most have gates and off-street parking for several cars. Downtown is ten minutes north on South Bayshore Drive, Brickell a little less. Coral Gables sits directly west, with Miracle Mile about ten minutes away and the Biltmore fifteen. Key Biscayne takes twenty minutes by way of the Rickenbacker Causeway, and the beaches at Crandon Park a few minutes past that.
Miami International is roughly twenty minutes, and there is a Metrorail station on US-1 for anyone who would rather skip the drive altogether. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and Matheson Hammock, with its man-made atoll pool and calm shallow water, are both about fifteen minutes south along Old Cutler Road.

It is one of the better ones. The houses have yards and pools, the streets are shaded and quiet, and Metrorail plus a ten-minute drive covers downtown, Coral Gables and the airport. Beaches take longer than they would from Miami Beach: Key Biscayne is twenty minutes and Crandon Park a little more.
Dinner Key Marina is the main departure point, with the Coconut Grove Sailing Club and Biscayne Bay Yacht Club close by. It opens straight into southern Biscayne Bay, which stays calmer than the water north of the causeways. Jatina Group arranges captained charters and day sails from here with notice.
The Grove is on the water and more walkable, with bars and restaurants packed into a few blocks. Coral Gables is inland, larger, and built around Mediterranean Revival streets and golf. Ten minutes separates them. Groups who want a boat pick the Grove; groups who want a big house and quiet pick the Gables.
